Environmental Policy
Katoll Metals and Industrial Products Ltd buys, decoils and shears steel to customers requirements. The company recognizes that industry as a whole has a responsibility to ensure that its activities do the least possible harm to the environment. The company has therefore decided that, in addition to his other duties, Mr D Williams, a director of the company will take responsibility for minimising the company’s impact upon the environment. The company has formulated the policies below to guide us through a programme of continuous improvement. Via an environmental review and impact assessment we have identified a number of environmental issues which have been addressed when developing the following policies. There are no major sources of emission to the atmosphere from any of the company’s activities. The only process that gives rise to any emissions is the factory heating when oil is burnt. The heating system is very rarely used being largely ineffective because of the need to have open roller shutter doors when receiving and dispatching goods. It will be our policy to minimise the use of the heating equipment and to maintain the burners in the heating equipment to ensure complete combustion when in use. The company does not discharge any process liquids either to storm drain or foul sewer. A small amount of lubrication oil is held at the factory and the compressor is regularly drained when oil contaminated condensate is collected. It will be our policy to implement written procedures to control the storage of any lubricating oil and contaminated condensate in order to minimise any danger of spillage. We will ensure that drums are stored inside the factory on a bunded pallet to minimise the possibility of accidental damage/spillage. We will also ensure that any accidental spillage does not directly enter a rain water drain and we will prepare written emergency procedures to deal with any spillage. The company produces very little waste. Steel off cuts are sold for recycling. Contaminated condensate is produced in small quantities over a long period and is collected for disposal in drums. The company is aware that this waste is hazardous and will ensure that it is disposed of in accordance with current legislation. The company dispatches cut blanks banded onto wooden pallets that are produced in house. It is our policy to minimise the production of all forms of waste. When waste is produced we will dispose of it in accordance with the relevant legislation ensuring that if any special waste is produced it is correctly segregated and disposed of via a licensed contractor. Although the company is not located adjacent to a residential area it is still close enough for the estate to be used as a playground by children. In the past skips containing waste have been ignited by youngsters. It is our policy to minimise the disruption that can be caused by vandals and to this end we will in future use lockable covered skips to hold wood and waste paper. In order that the policies above are implemented effectively the company has adopted the following supplementary policies:- We will comply with all relevant environmental legislation and regulations and any associated policies and procedures which we may from time to time adopt. We will communicate this policy to all of our employees and will encourage them to support it through positive action whenever possible. We will ensure that this policy is available to all stake holders in the company and to the general public
